For my Clients' Toughest Changes, I use Motivational Interviewing
An evidence based way of talking with people about change
Let's say you want to change something...
(physical health/ mental/ relationships/ environment/ etc.)
You want your today & tomorrows to be different than yesterdays.
Like a new version of the iPhone.
(The previous version was awesome. But we still like to upgrade.)
So... what do you do?
Maybe you try self-help: Books & content.
But...something's missing.
So...you hire an expert to help you.
But — This expert keeps telling you what to do.
(Seems like they're trying to fix or control you)
Expert: "Follow my advice/ plan. Track it."
You: "Umm. Okay. I'll try."
Sometimes, it works & everyone is happy...
But mostly, you give up & ghost the expert...
OR you keep trying harder & it doesn't work.
If it doesn't work...
You're labelled as "lazy" or "resistant to change"
Or they say, "You don't want it enough to follow"
"You are not consistent or disciplined"
But the truth is—
In this story, you never got any effective evidence-based help!
And effective help needs Motivational Interviewing (MI).
“MI is a way of talking with people about change & growth to strengthen their own motivation & commitment.”
How?
Let's say instead of hiring a "follow-me" expert, you hire an MI-trained coach.
Who treats you as an equal partner.
Doesn't just tell you what to do.
Doesn’t just hand you a plan.
Instead engages with you.
Is curious about your life, what matters to you & where you want to go.
Doesn't interrogate you.
Instead, invites you to explore your thoughts safely.
Listens—really listens as you talk.
Tries to understand you deeply.
Becomes a mirror for you to see & hear yourself clearly.
Not just your words but your emotions & desires underneath.
There’s no judgment here, only acceptance and understanding.
You start to feel truly heard—maybe for the first time.
This coach doesn't jump to solutions.
Instead helps you focus on what’s most important.
Doesn't overwhelm you or dump information on you.
Helps you narrow down your choices. Clears your path.
Recognises and highlights your strengths.
You begin to see yourself differently.
..not as someone who needs fixing...
...but as someone with the power to change.
If and when a plan is required, the coach is curious about your ideas first.
Takes permission to share relevant ideas/ information when you're stuck.
Imagine...
Instead of feeling controlled, you feel empowered.
Instead of being another project to fix...
...you’re seen as an awesome person with unique strengths.
Feels good?
That’s Motivational Interviewing (MI).
It’s not about forcing change/ growth—it’s about evoking it from within.
Like how you help a plant grow by watering it :)
Would you like to experience this?
...and close this gap?👇🏼
"I want to change" —> "I did it!"
